Ask Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Dear Doctor Judy,

What do you recamend for someone with low serotonin levels as well as thyroid and adrenal fatigue. Being over weight and having troubel losign the weight is an issue as well as sever pms symptoms and crying starting up to two weeks before period.
       Delores

A: Dear Delores
Thank you for writing. May I suggest going on a weight loss plan I
developed that increases serotonin levels and incorporates Serotrim as a snack. The Serotonin Power
Diet, Rodale Press,2007, will increase your will power and also improve your mood. Go to
our web site serotoninpowerdiet.com to learn more. Judy Wurtman

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Dr. Judy,

I am hypothyroid, would that interfere with my taking Serotrim? Thank you for taking my question.
       Lillian

A: Dear Lillian
No, Serotrim will not interfer with your thyroid medication. The drink is made from natural carbohydrates like potatoes or bread. And you will find it helping you lose weight without needing very much will power.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Could you please let me know where I can buy Serotrim in Australia, or whether there is a suitable alternative. I am desperate to slow the rate of my anti-depressant induced weight gain. Thank you, Susan

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I'm confused. Your plan seems to contradict many weight loss recommendations that stress limiting carbohydrates. Specifically, the Schwarzbein approach suggested by the Women to Women website stresses the need to keep carbohydrates to around 60 grams per day. And why no protein in the evenings?

I am 40 lbs overweight and am suffering many symptoms of perimenopause (insomnia, fuzzy thinking, depression, anxiety and weight gain)

Can you clarify your plan's approach to carbohydrate and protein intake?

Thanks
       Jane

A: Dear Jane
I glad you wrote because you identified what makes our program unique and effective. Carbohydrates are essential for brain health . What we have found in over 30years of research at MIT is that the brain neurotransmitter serotonin is made only when you eat carbohydrate. A certain amount must be eaten and it cannot be eaten with any protein. Protein interfers with the manufacture of serotonin. This brain chemical, serotonin as you probably know regulates our mood but just as important, it shuts off our appetite and leaves us feeling satisfied. Our diet plan which is presented in The Serotonin Power Diet is based on increasing the power of your brain to control eating by boosting serotonin levels. If you do not eat enough carbohydrate, your serotonin levels will drop and you will experience all the mood changes associated with depression and PMS.
If you get a copy of the book, you can check out all the published studies listed in the references and also read obout our research in the earlier chapters of the book. Please write again for more information.. Judith Wurtman

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I developed patterns of snacking under stressful deadlines while in college. I now seem to have an irresistible, addict-like drive to eat carbs + fat
(pizza, leftovers, guac & chips) whenever I am stressed--and as a busy wife, mom, and business owner, I am often stressed. I am 45 and now 80# overweight. After observing my behavior, I realize that I am dependent on a release of food-induced brain chemicals whenever I am tired, headachy, nervous, upset or under pressure. I use food in order to diffuse my anxiety and help me to focus on my responsibilities. I do not consume alcohol, coffee, tobacco, or illegal drugs, and try to avoid OTC drugs as well. I try to eat healthy the rest of the time and take a daily brisk 20-45 minute walk. It seems the stress eating is my downfall. Do you have any suggestions for overcoming this legal, but deadly "addiction" and how Serotrim might be used in my situation?
       Linda

A: Dear Linda
Dear Linda, Serotrim will take away the desire to eat from stress but you have to use it along with a weight loss program. And you also have to try to find ways of decreasing your stress by changing, even in tiny ways, the things that cause you to be exhausted and feeling wiped out. Our book, The Serotonin Power diet gives you a diet plan that allows you to use Serotrim rather than the snacks listed in the book ( serotrim is good for you because you will never never binge on it) but the book also deals with how to reduce stress. We also could help you with a telephone consult if you want. But in the meanwhile, get the book, write back to me and see whether I can help via e mail. Also use the Serotrim. It will help immediately. Judith Wurtman

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Dear Dr. Judy,

I have a deficiency of serotonin going to my brain and my physician has just changed my medication from Lexapro to Citalopram HBR tabs 40 mg q.d. I am 67 y/o and have gained about 45 lbs over the years and after stopping my hormonal replacement therapy that did not seem to help my weight. I would like to lose approx. 30 lbs. Please help with a program for me to help me lose weight.
       Lillian

A: Dear Lillian
It is important for you to make sure that your brain is making enough serotonin for the drug to act on. Our book, the Serotonin Power Diet, Rodale 2007, tells you how to eat to increase serotonin levels in your brain. If you follow the program, you will feel better, sleep better and the increased serotonin will act as a brake on your appetite so you will lose weight. Please write to me with any questions you might have after you have started on the program. I will be glad to help. Also look at our web sitw, www.serotoninpowerdiet.com to see how others have done on the diet with the same problem; gaining weight on antidepressants.
Judith Wurtman
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
So I read it is safe to follow the weight watchers point system while taking Serotrim. Is this true? Also is this a safe product for my future? If I begin Serotrim and eventaully go off of it, is my brain going to be craving it as a drug? What are the future side affects?
       Bonnie

A: Dear Bonnie
Yes you can use the Serotrim on weight watchers although you might want to check out the diet plan presented in The Serotonin Power Diet to see the most effective way of eating carb to control emotional overeating.
No matter how much weight you lose, your brain will respond the same to emotional cues to eat or eating out of appetite, not hunger. As you will see from what we say over and over again in the book, you must continue to eat carbs (it does not have to be Serotrim all the time) to make sure you have enough serotonin in your brain. Weight Watchers is an excellent program and obtaining some knowledge about how the brain controls eating and how you can control your brain through your diet would make the program even more effective.
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Can Serotrim and the eating plan be used by diabetics?
       kathy

A: Dear kathy
We recommend that you first discuss with your doctor.
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Do you have any plans to market Serotrim in Australia? Shipping costs from US sites are prohibitively expensive, usually more expensive than the products themselves.
Regards

       Anna

A: Dear Anna
We are interested if you know a distributor that would be willing to distribute the product for us.
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I am interested in your opinion of 5-HTP (described as the step between tryptophan and serotonin. I have been taking 2 50mg capsules 3 times a day and find that it does alleviate emotional overeating and allows me to follow a lower carb diet. Is this okay to take or would I be better off trying something like Serotrim.
       Elena

A: Dear Elena
I noted your use of 5htp. For many people that supplement causes some
drowsiness; at least in amounts that are effective in cutting back
appetite. Also it is a chemical and you might feel more confident with Serotrim since it contains only natural carbohydrates Please write again if you have more questions.
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I have been taking 20 mg. of Paxil for quite a while now, was prescribed 5 mg. of Lisiniprol a year ago and have steadily gained too much weight along the way. I will be celebrating my 50th birthday in June and would like to begin a weight loss program. I am interested in your product as it appears to address my situation. Would it be feasible for someone on Paxil and Lisiniprol to use the product? Please advise.
       Rosanne

A: Dear Rosanne
Unless you are diabetic, you can follow the diet plan using Serotrim. My book, the Serotonin Power Diet will give you guidelines on when to take the drink and what to eat for meals. Also the book will help you with situations that seem to defeat sucessful dieting. Paxil probalby leaves you tired so try your best to exercise even though your body may not want you to.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I am considering starting serotrim primarily to combat a growing emotional overeating problem and secondarily to lose the several pounds I've gained as a result. I typically get up at 5:30 a.m. to workout and eat a later breakfast, with about 3.5 to 4 hours between breakfast and lunch. I try to eat some carbs before working out (energy gel packet or a bit of cereal or dried fruit) Can I use serotrim before my a.m. workout instead of before lunch, and then again before dinner? My binge times vary from first thing in the morning (before workout of after breakfast) to late afternoon to after dinner.
       Tracey

A: Dear Tracey
The most effective use of the Serotrim is as an appetite controller so having in an hour before lunch and then late in the afternoon is the
best schedule for you to follow. If you want check out the diet program in my new book, The Serotonin Power Diet which will give you a schedule of serotonin producing snacks or Serotrim for weight loss. You might also want to consider following the meal plan which is designed to energize the mind during the day and calm the emotions at night. Before working out, it would be better for you to eat dried fruit as you have been or fresh fruit like a banana and maybe a handful of dry breakfast cereal to give you body some energy.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
What is the shelf life of Serotrim. I bought some about 6 months ago and didn't use it all and now I want to try it again and I was wondering if it is still good.
       Cynthia

A: Dear Cynthia
30 months
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I have been on Serotrim for 3 days, and have found it to be very helpful in controlling my hunger. However, since starting the drink and diet, I have not been able to sleep. Is this common? I also take Prozac. Any suggestions will be appreciated

       Marilyn

A: Dear Marilyn
If anything the diet and drink should make sleeping easier. However
Prozac may be affecting your sleep and I would mention this to your
physician. Be sure to avoid all caffeinated beverages for several hours
before bedtime including caffeinated diet sodas.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I just received my order of serotrim. I am taking a combination of prozac and wellbutrin, and am concerned about too much serotonin. I understand there is the possibility of that being a danger. I was also concerned about the amount of sugar in the drink. Thank you for your reply.
       Marilyn

A: Dear Marilyn
The drink has been tested with individuals who have been treated with a variety of antidepressants and related medications. Not only is it
safe, it does help promote weight loss and in addition, add a dimension of calmness and relaxation that complement the effects of the medication.

The drink does contain sugar; the same sugar your body uses for its
energy source. That is glucose which is also called dextrose. The reason for adding the different carbohydrates to the drink is to make is sort of a time released drink. The sugar gets the brain to make serotonin quickly and the other carbohydrates which are digested more slowly, keep the process which manufactures serotonin going for a while. So enjoy the beneftis of the drink, you will find yourself feeling less hungry and with a sense of well being very shortly.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Can I take Serotrim and go to Weight Watchers at the same time?
       Bec

A: Dear Bec
Yes you can. If you are following the point system, give the drink the same number of points as two pieces of bread.
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Any thoughts on the use of
Meridia with serotrim?
       cheryl

A: Dear cheryl
Dear Cheryl, Since Meridia is supposed to act as an appetite suppressant,
you should not need any additional help in curbing your appetite. If you do,
then I would check with your physician about whether you should continue on
Meridia . Serotrim is a food based, natural way to curb appetite with no
side effects and most people find it works well.
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I am on Zoloft for a bipolar disease and I've been struggling with my weight for some time. I tried Atkins and I lost about 40 pounds. But I went off it and now I've gained 80 pounds back. It feels like an addiction and I've tried Atkins and Medifast and neither one worked for me. Can this stuff work without imparing the medication?
       Rob

A: Dear Rob
Dear Rob:

Serotrim will help you lose weight and keep away the cravings that put it on in the first place. Your brain is craving carbohydrates and when you went on Atkins, you were denying your brain the carbohydrates it needed.
Try the Serotrim and follow the diet plan in the package insert. That is very important because the meal plan also raises brain serotonin, especially in the evening. Please write to me if you have any more questions. You can get Serotrim at www.serotrim.com.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I currently take 75 mg.of Amitriptylene each day for fibromyalgia. Can I replace the medicine with your Serotrim because they are giving me the medice to raise my serotonin level.?
       Chris

A: Dear Chris
Chris:
Never change your medication without the advice of your physician. You might want to take Serotrim along with the medication you are on as it helps raise serotonin levels naturally (as eating a potato would). If you are also finding yourself craving carbohydrates as a result of your medication, Serotrim will stop those cravings.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I am a 53 year old male who has been active and athletic my whole life.(5-6 aerobic workouts at week minimum 30 minutes) Because of severe, recurrent depression in the past, I have been taking Celexa and Remeron on a maintenance basis for approx. 5 years. The good news is that I have had no relapses of depression, the bad news is that I have gained about 20 lbs. Is Serotrim a safe and effective product to help me lose this weight?
P.S. I have also experienced more nighttime cravings in the past 5 years.
Thanks for your assistance.
       John

A: Dear John
John:
Serotrim is perfect for your problem. I would suggest that you
have the drink on a slightly different schedule than recommended in the package insert. You will be taking two a day: have the first late
in the afternoon, eat a very low protein, high carbohydrate dinner,
and have the second drink about an hour before you go to sleep. This
should eliminate your evening cravings.
Judith Wurtman

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Dear Judy,
I have two questions. First, as my PMS symptoms begin with the onset of the luteal phase, would you recommend switching from Serotrim to PMS escape for this entire two week period?

Second, If Serotrim were to be ued, not as a weight loss drink, but solely for its anti-depressant effect, might you recommend a third drink during the day -- Perhaps upon waking or just prior to bedtime, to help alleviate sleep disturbances?
Melisa
       melisa

A: Dear melisa
Dear Melisa:
You can keep on taking the Serotrim, the effect of brain serotonin is similar to that of PMS Escape. However, what you might want to do is make sure that you are eating no protein at night so your brain is making much more serotonin for the evening hours. If you are eating protein at dinner while you have PMS, if may prevent your symptoms from going away. If you wake up at night or have falling asleep, you certainly can take another Serotrim.
Judy

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I am currently taking prednisone for an autoimmune condition. We've begun the taper-I'm currently on 20 mg, down from 60, but it will take at least the rest of the year, maybe longer, to get off it. I was about 70 lbs overweight when I started the prednisone and have gained about 65 lbs while on this therapy. Will Serotrim be effective while I'm still taking the prednisone?
       Sandra

A: Dear Sandra
Dear Sandra:
You probably will find the weight coming off easily as you decrease the prednisone. If you are finding that your appetite is still greater than it was before the prednisone, the Serotrim will be useful. However if your appetite is under control, then exercise if you are allowed to do it will be just as helpful.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I am extremely allergic to eggs and egg byproducts. Does the Serotrim diet drinks have eggs or egg byproducts in them? Does the diet that goes along with this request a person to eat eggs and if so, can you advise an alternative? Thanks,
       Carole

A: Dear Carole
Thanks for writing in. You certainly do not have to eat eggs on the diet. Our product contains no eggs, or egg derivatives. It is perfectly safe for someone who is allergic to eggs.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
You stress a carb-rich program; Dr. Diana Schwarzbein does the opposite, stating that getting away from the processed carbs/starches will cure the addiction. I'm interested in how you address this. Thank you.
       Pam

A: Dear Pam
Thanks for writing. Dr Schwarzbein gives good advice when she says you ought to stay away from heavily processed carbs like jelly doughnuts and fritos. However complex carbohydrates like brown rice, barley, pasta, potatoes, cornmeal etc have been the staple of our diet for hundreds of years. When you eat the amount of carbohydrate your brain is demanding of you, the cravings for carbs will stop.
If you have any more questions, please contact me.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Dr.Judy-will serotrim raise blood pressure or make you nerveous and does it interact with any medications-Clara
       Clara

A: Dear Clara
Dear Clara:

WHile anything is possible, we have no reason to believe that Serotrim will raise blood pressure or make you nerveous. Further since there are no drugs in Serotrim we do not have any reason to believe that it will have a negative interaction with any medications. The one thing we stress is that Serotrim should not be used by diabetics.

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I have been using Serotrim for about a week and got a very bad stomach virus. I also developed alot of gas from the Serotrim beverage, however it did great for my appetite between meals. Does the beverage have any side effects? I would like to continue with it.
       Victoria

A: Dear Victoria
I am sorry to hear about the stomach virus but that is a coincidence.
I wonder if the gas is part of the stomach virus as well. Stay with the
Serotrim, as you lose weight your appetite will decrease even more.

Dear Dr. Judy,
I have been struggling with depression for a while and more recently have gained alot of weight. I have also found that my PMS is worse.I am 45 so I'm not sure if I am peri menopausal. Hello, I read the article in the Womans World magazine, and Dr. Hart said to take the supplement of the following vitamins, tryptophan, B vitamins, C vitamins, calcium and magnesium. My question is, can I buy 1 vitamin with these ingredients in them. I would like to follow your diet plan, but I am confussed as the article talks about a supplement you can buy. Please inform me if you know of such a supplemen. Thanks,

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Dear Judy - Is there a special diet for menopausal women? Also, what dietary supplements would you recommend during menopause in conjunction with your diet?
       Sarah

A: Dear Sarah
There is no special menopausal diet; however women should try to eat dairy products or take calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis. If you are looking to lose wait I believe the Serotrim diet is excellent because it deals with between meal appetite pangs. I would also recommend trying PMS Escape during menopause, it might help with mood and appetite changes that you are experiencing

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Dear Dr. Judy,

I recently saw a documentary on the science channel that told of your weight loss program at MIT. I did some research on the internet and found serotrim.

I have about 100 lbs to lose and I see that your program is a 12 week program. Can I continue the program for a longer period of time in order to lose all of the weight? Also when I have reached my desire weight, do you have a maintenance plan?

I have ordered the serotrim drink and am anxious to begin your program!

Thanks,
Patricia

       Patricia

A: Dear Patricia
The answers to your questions are yes and yes. As you follow the diet and lose weight the drink will work better and better. And we have many clients who have been taking the drink for one or two years beyond the end of their diet in order to prevent themselves from emotional overeating and help control portion sizes. As you are starting at a fairly high weight, I would suggest following the male food plan that gives you more calories at the outset. Otherwise you may feel hungry. Obviously exercise, even minimal will make a difference in the rate and consistency of your weight loss. Without it, you will find yourself losing weight too slowly to keep you content.
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
So, let's get down to the nitty gritty!

What's the cost of Serotrim?
       Hope

A: Dear Hope
A two week supply of Serotrim can be purchased for $34.99 by calling 800-767-6369 or by ordering via our website, www.serotrim.com.

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
What exactly is in Serotrim?
On the website it is explained as a "carbohydrate rich" but what are all the elements?

Sincerely,
P. Rochin
       Priscilla

       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
When it says to eat 2 grams of fat per serving of protein, it means that if I eat 25 grams of protein, I can have 2 of fat?
Should I consider Total Fat or Saturated Fat only on food lables?
       Melina

A: Dear Melina
You should look at Total Fat.
       Dr. Judy

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Dr. Wurtman,
I have your book, "The Serotonin Solution" and also have a supply of Serotrim. I was wondering why there is a difference in the two diets(the amount of protein and carbohydrates, one snack in the book, 2 drinks on Serotrim, etc...) Would you please tell me why the difference and any benefits to one or the other? I am currently weaning off of Serzone, (an antidepressant which I started taking due to panic attacks and depression), and was curious as to the benefits of the book or the drink.

Thank you in advance for you attention to this email.

measuring snacks) to the public. Moreover the diet plan has been tested over 6 years
in a
weight loss center which I run so I know it works really well. Follow
the
plan that comes with Serotrim and take the drink twice a day. By the
way,
you will feel very calm and relaxed on the drink; some people just take
it
to feel calm.

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Can PMS Escape be used by a male until Serotrim is available? TIA.
       Samuel

A: Dear Samuel
While both products work by raising brain serotonin levels, Serotrim has been designed with dieters in mind. It has 30 fewer calories and 7 grams of fiber per serving to help you feel full and satisfied between meals. With this said, a man who took PMS Escape to lose weight certainly can expect to see positive effects.

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
Do you know if eating breakfast can improve your memory? My students are doing a Science Fair experiment and was wondering if you could help or know where we can find some information. Thank you
       Patti

A: Dear Patti
Eating breakfast may or may not improve memory but it will improve
concentration. This means that if attention is paid to learning what is
going on, there is probably a good chance that it will be remembered as
well.

Q: Dear Dr. Judy,
I'd like to be notified when Serotrim is made available and how I can get it. I use PMSEscape and it has made a HUGE difference for me. I was upset when it was no longer available in stores, but was SOOO happy to find it was available on your website. I can only imagine that Serotrim will be an equally great product!
       Catherine

A: Dear Catherine
I am very happy to her that PMS Escape works so well for you.
I have added your email address to our Serotrim database and will make sure you are notified as soon as Serotrim becomes available.
